The Story of Buda
Buda (pronounced "BYOO-duh") was established in 1881 as a railroad stop on the International-Great Northern line. The name's origin is debated — some attribute it to "viuda" (Spanish for widow), referencing a young widow who ran the local hotel. The town remained a small agricultural community until the Austin metro's southward expansion reached it in the 2000s. Today Buda brands itself "The Outdoor Capital of Texas," anchored by the City Park trail system, Garlic Creek Park, and access to the Blanco River. The annual Buda Wiener Dog Races — featuring dachshund sprints down Main Street — draw thousands and reflect the town's playful, tight-knit character.
